Valentine's Day is a perfect time to surprise loved ones with a gift that gives back. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) has ideas for gifts that will help fund diabetes research.

More than 24 million Americans have diabetes. A new case is diagnosed every 30 seconds. The most serious form is type 1, an autoimmune disease that strikes most often in childhood and adolescence and requires daily insulin in order to live. Each year more than 15,000 children are diagnosed -- that's 40 children each day. In an effort to find a cure, JDRF -- the world's largest charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research -- is offering an opportunity to purchase jewelry from a collection that contributes proceeds to their mission.

The JDRF Collection is part of the ElyseRyan jewelry line created by Elise Rosenstock of Avon, CT, a nationally-recognized designer in the couture jewelry market. To benefit diabetes research, she created two distinct designs using semi-precious stones and sterling silver:

JDRF Beaded Necklace -- Intended to appeal to all ages, especially teens, this design uses blue Swarovski crystals, pearls and sterling silver accents. The necklace is available in 15", 16" and 18" lengths and has the ElyseRyan signature toggle clasp. It ranges from $85.00 to $105.00. Matching earrings are available at $45.00.

JDRF Teardrop Necklace -- This eye-catching necklace is made with an iridescent, tear drop-shaped, blue-green Swarovski crystal set in intricately carved sterling silver, with a matching 18" chain and ElyseRyan signature toggle clasp. Available at $98.00.

Both designs may be purchased locally at Bill Selig Jewelers or ordered online at www.elyseryan.com/jdrf in time for Valentine's Day. Questions may be directed to JDRF's North Central CT/Western MA Chapter at 860-470-0020 or northcentralct@jdrf.org.

JDRF is the largest charitable funder and advocate of type 1 diabetes research. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in FY2008. In a typical year, more than 85 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and research-related education. JDRF's mission is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. For more information, go to www.jdrf.org.
